Mr. Sullivan, my 12th grade English teacher, made us dress up in Burger King crowns and sword fight with paper towel tubes to make sense of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Here at the American School in Guadalajara we are going to use the internet instead. In the posts below, follow us as we seek to understand why this really is the greatest play in the English language.
What is Gertrude’s responsibility for all that has taken place, according to Hamlet? According to you?
ReplyDeleteHamlet believes that Gertrude is a big part of the problem, she could have said no to his uncles request, and should have thought of others before herself. I agree with Hamlet her reaction to the kings death was too rash.

I think Gertrude isn't entirely passive in this scenario. However, I don't agree with Hamlet either. To some degree, Hamlet blames her for everything that has happened. And yes, it was wrong for her to marry his uncle almost after his dad's death. However, that is all she did and it seems like she is really in love.
ReplyDeleteSo Hamlet should have just talked-it-out, and learned to live with it, instead of getting overly emotional and killing people everywhere.
Hamlet blames her mother for what happened to his father. Of course it was wrong that so little after his death she married a man, and not only any man but his brother, which is like...the lowest she could do. However, Hamlet blames her entirely, and I disagree. First of all I disagree with Hamlet not being brave enough to talk straighforwardly with his mother, his own flesh and blood, about what was bothering him, it's not that hard. Secondly, I dont see Gertrude as a very bright woman, and she probably doesnt even know exactly what is going on even though Hamlet already went and screamed at her. I dont think its her fault that all of this is happening to his son, however she could give her decisions a little more thought before acting like a desperate, hormone-guided middle aged woman.
ReplyDeleteI mean, she IS the queen, one would think she would be capable of making better choices.

According to me, Gertrude is responsible for marrying Claudius and thus triggering Hamlet's anger towards her disrespect toward her ex-husband. She is also responsible for denying her "mistake" and acting as if nothing wrong had happened. I do not mean to say that she is responsible for everything, but she holds certain responsibility.

Hamlet beleieves that his mother's is responsible for being disrespectful to the king's honorable figure. He believes she can be held accountable for that and for having an attitude that is very unworthy of a true lady.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion however, Getrude has a degree of responsibility for this and for the King's murther too. If Getrude wouldn't have initially flirted with Claudius, Claudius wouldn't have killed the king because even if he did the next in line for the throne was Hamlet. However, his thirst for power and his ambition, seeked a great opportunity when he noticed that there was chemistry between him and Getrude. He got smart and thought, if I make this lady fall in love with me, then once I kill my brother I'll be able to become the King. Without her collaboration (even if indirect) the assasination wouldn't have ever happened and there would be no play. I believe that is why Gertrude is such an important character to the play....
i do believe GERTRUDE has a lot of responsibility for what happened. Because of her, Hamlet "acted crazy" because of her marrying his uncle, which is kind of disturbing. She is acting like an innocent character, which she is not. SHE IS GUILTY for most of what happened, and for that she should take action for her own acts.
ReplyDeleteKARLA(:
Gertrude does take some of the responsibility for Hamlet's actions. Her marriage is the most upsetting thing to Hamlet and this makes her very responsible. And like Karla said her acting innocent just isnt gonna work.

Hamlet believes that his mother should have waited if not a long time then forever to marry again and sees this as offensive and disgusting... a gross plus for marrying the uncle.
ReplyDeleteAlso I think deep down he thinks that Gertrude was an object of desire and that maybe for her, to have her, claudius killed the king and blames her for that even though she didn't know... to be honest I dont know if hamlet thinks this but if I were him I would definetly do.
According to me, Gertrude is very responsible for Hamlets problems and for making him feel miserable. Gertrude, by marying Hamlets uncle made hamlet loose respect for women, for his mother and for marriage.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Karla that the inocent atitude of Gertrude doesn't work and doesn't make her less responsible. This marriage is what bothers Hamlet the most and Gertrude is held responsible.

Yes I think Gertrude was responsible for has happened but not in a direct way. Maybe Claudius had been extremely jealous of his brother for having everything taht he wanted like the throne and his wife. He killed Hamlet's father to get those things and one of them was Gertrude. She also didn't help by marrying the uncle so quickly. This has angered Hamlet significantly more, probably the most. If she hadn't gone through maybe Hamlet wouldn't be so indecisive and kill his uncle right away, avioding messy problems. WILL
ReplyDeleteGertrude is not responsible for anyone's death but is responsible for Hamlet's madness: real madness which he is starting to show for real. She is just so naive that it is annoying. There is so much drama going on and she just doesn't seem to understand the gravuty of the issues. Hamlet is very dissapoined in her but doesnt blame her for anyone's death either. He just blames her for such unmannered offensive behavior. he just cant believe she married his husband's brither/killer a month after his death and doesn't seem perturbed by it. She is just annoyingly stupid.

I wish i could agree that she isnt to blame for so much....but the truth is...i understand where Hamlet is coming from
ReplyDeletei mean, COME ON!!! She married the brother of his dead husband less than two months after he died. WTF!!
even if she didnt love the king anymore, out of respect u wait a lot more than just 60 days. I would be mad at her too if she were my mother.

ReplyDeleteLike others, I wish I couldn't blame GErtrude but she is really the main to almost everything that has occured. She married without really analysing what could happened and her actions have led to Hamlet's plan, the death of Polonius and even Ophelia's madness.
hamlet blames her for everything, and so do i.
ReplyDeleteis not just that she married the brother, and everything we know shes done because of the play but it was her responsibility to raise hamlet and look at what happened to him now and how he is towards women and in is weird strange personality
To paraphrase my classmates, Hamlet blame Gertrude for everything.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, it isn't really her fault at all. Maybe she was in love with the Uncle and had been for years. Maybe she had to marry him because of some obscure law in Denmark and was trying to do the right thing. She isn't evil.
If I were Hamlet, I would direct my anger at the uncle. If he considers women to be frail, passive creatures, then why does he consider one woman to have all this power?
Lina Silva
Ger's is responsible for everything. If she wouldn't have married Hamlet's uncle Hamlet would've become the king. However, she decided to rush and marry so her son won't be the king. What kind of mother is that??? In addition, it's disgusting
ReplyDeleteSun Young
according to hamlet, everything is gertrude's fault. even when he knows that his uncle killed his dad, he seems to be more angry with his mother than with his uncle.
ReplyDeleteI agree that he should be angry, and that it was absolutely wrong for her to marry hamlet's uncle barely 2 months after the king's death. however, all of the decision that hamlet has made, have ben exactly that, his decisions. He can't keep blaming his mom for everything. she's obviously not very smart and easily falls in love. Once you realize that she dioesnt know what she's doing, move on.....Hamlet is smart, he could've done the right thing from the beginning instead of choosing the path he did.

according to Hamlet, woman are inferior and have been the pain to all men. According to hamlet, woman make men suffer and destroy men. Therefore, he blames Gertude for all his misery. His father was murdered yes, but it was Gertude who perhaps showed fake love towards her late husband and then hastily married Cluadius.
ReplyDeleteHowever, i think that Hamlet is trying to blame everyone but himslef. Although he did not commit a crime, he is guily of not responding intellegently towards the situation. Hamlet could have let it go, or talk to his mother privately, but instead he decide revenge was the best response to the situation.
